Science has shown that, due to our reptilian brain and inborn survival instincts, the vast majority prefer the status quo in their everyday rhythm. It\u2019s just the way we\u2019re wired. We fear losing control and enjoy the safety of what\u2019s known and familiar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, for better or worse, change helps us grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, we step willingly outside of our comfort zone and make a conscious decision to be brave and take a different path. Other times, the necessity of change is forced upon us. And then what do we do? We adapt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is exactly what happened with the COVID-19 outbreak. Many C-level executives that had been used to leading their organization in a traditional work setting had to take a crash course on remote management.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Undoubtedly, switching from managing co-located teams to remote management has its learning curve. But companies around the world have proved that it&#8217;s doable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, why do so many forward-thinking leaders still struggle with remote management? What\u2019s the catch?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s start from the beginning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2943\" src=\"https:\/\/www.interventure.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Remote-management-3.jpg\" alt=\"Remote management\" width=\"1500\" height=\"994\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remote work has been around for a while<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First things first: remote work has been here way before it became necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pandemic has accelerated remote adoption. Everyone knows this. In fact, it\u2019s all that the business industry has been talking about in recent months. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/mckinsey-digital\/our-insights\/the-covid-19-recovery-will-be-digital-a-plan-for-the-first-90-days\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKinsey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the current percentage of employees working remotely full-time is somewhere between 34% and 75%, depending on the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This fundamental change in the way we work has also sparked conversations about virtual teams being the \u2018future of work&#8216;. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/remote-how.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Remote_Managers.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">latest research by Remote-How<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that 87% of managers believe this to be true.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, companies of all sizes have been enjoying multiple benefits of the remote model <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: italic;\">for years<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, all thanks to rapid globalization and technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those early remote work adopters were really onto something. They knew that a) the most talented people in the world don\u2019t live in one place and b) location should never step in the way of a meaningful partnership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansonn, founders of Basecamp and authors of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/basecamp.com\/books\/remote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Remote\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, wrote:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: italic;\">Talent isn\u2019t bound by the hubs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alas, the benefits of sourcing globally to assemble an all-star remote team cannot simply undo the fact that remote management isn\u2019t easy. But it definitely doesn\u2019t have to be a nightmare.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The manageable challenges of remote management<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Managing people is a tough job even when it\u2019s done face-to-face. Due to the lack of live contact, remote management comes with an additional set of challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By definition, remote management implies managing people who work remotely. Remote teams increase the risk of a data breach because the company does not entirely control the IT environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul style=\"list-style-position: inside; list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understand that security is a problem that can easily be solved with the right technology<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introduce a security checklist that all remote workers must follow (e.g. hard drive encryption, disabled automatic login, safe web surfing, strong passwords, two-factor authentication, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consult an IT expert who can help you tighten up security<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The quick tips listed in the table above merely provide a checklist of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: italic;\">what <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">needs to be done so that each challenge of remote management is properly addressed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the level of leadership and organizational skills play a vital role in terms of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: italic;\">how successfully <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you&#8217;ll operate as a remote team\/company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are numerous helpful frameworks and defined workflows, but without one fundamental value in place, it all falls apart. You guessed it &#8211; it\u2019s mutual trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2937\" src=\"https:\/\/www.interventure.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Remote-management-1.jpg\" alt=\"Remote management\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To all remote managers: mutual trust is a must<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In remote management, one thing\u2019s for sure: those responsible for recruiting remote team members are more mindful when hiring new people. They are looking not only for talented individuals who are supposed to fit certain criteria when it comes to experience and expertise level but also for those who are comfortable with the remote setting and have great self-discipline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even before the pandemic, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2020\/07\/remote-managers-are-having-trust-issues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remote managers had trust issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and doubts about their teams and whether or not they truly work as much as they should. Business psychologists point out that the lack of trust shown by the managers might come as a consequence of the low-autonomy they experience (or have experienced) within their roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, in a chain reaction, the \u2018I don\u2019t fully trust you\u2019 vibe is transferred from one link to another, and it creates a toxic environment. Trust is a delicate thing and it cannot exist without reciprocity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides trust, respected psychologist, and organizational consultant, Dr. Arnie Dahlke, identified four key elements for setting up your remote team for success:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mutual respect<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open communication<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cultivating a problem-solving mindset<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensuring everyone stays focused on the organizational mission<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To do so, remote managers need to resist micromanagement. Criticism, extreme supervision, and babysitting team members cannot bring anything good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Dahlke suggests a healthy balance can be achieved with a simple switch in behaviour. Too often, remote work is connected to the notion of outsourcing as a way of increasing output at the lowest possible cost. The truth is, technology has created an opportunity for people around the world to reach out to one another, connect in an instant, and do meaningful work together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offices are nice, but they are not required anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This evolution in how we work began way before the pandemic, thanks to the democratization of the Internet and constant technological developments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, it\u2019s not really about \u2018the future of work\u2019 (although we admit, this sounds awesome). The authors of \u2018Remote\u2019 included a quote by the famous sci-fi writer William Gibson to wonderfully illustrate this point:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: italic;\">The future is here, it\u2019s just not evenly distributed.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an age of hyperconnectivity, humans have the ability to do amazing work together. The new ways of communication are not here to replace our connections, but to complement and enrich them, and pave new paths for innovation.
